THREE weeks of roadworks ended a day earlier than planned, much to the relief of the borough’s motorists.
The A327 between Shinfield and Arborfield was re-opened, ahead of schedule, at 4.30pm on Saturday, August 22.
The road had been closed for three weeks from August 2 so that flood relief measures could be installed.
Construction company Hochtief said that the closure was considered to be the “least bad” option, as the work was undertaken during the summer holidays and taking into consideration the potential for significant delays due to signals operating during peak times.
The alternative to the three-week closure was a much longer period of work across the A327, lasting for up to six months.
Kelly Shear, public liaison officer for Hochtief, said: “We appreciate that this has been an inconvenience and would like to thank everyone for their patience during the last 3 weeks.
“We have recently received a few queries regarding the continued use of temporary traffic signals on the A327. For clarification, the above mentioned three-week road closure was specifically in place for the installation of the flood relief culverts.
“It has always been the case that the project will require the use of temporary off-peak signals to allow the completion of work (both for access purposes and to provide a safe work zone where needed), however, the use of signals will be reviewed and approved by Wokingham Borough Council in advance.
“In addition to this utility companies have statutory powers enabling them to undertake unrestricted works in the highway as, and when, necessary.”
