WOKINGHAM Schools presented their handmade decorations to Wokingham Town Mayor Councillor Sally Gurney, and Wokingham Mini Mayor Leah Vas at a ceremony in the Market Place on Monday evening.
Pupils from 18 schools in the borough took part in the event, watched by a crowd of supporters.
Chair of the Arts and Culture Committee, Councillor Barrie Callender compered, and Wokingham Choral Society led carols and festive songs, including: Jingle Bells, Good King Wenceslas, Deck The Halls, Let It Snow, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and, We Wish You a Merry Christmas.
Lyrics about bad weather caused amusement, as people sang ‘the rude wind’s wild lament’, and ‘the weather outside is frightful’, underneath their umbrellas.
But 4th Wokingham Scouts kept them warm with hot drinks, and served mince pies donated by Morrisons and Tesco.
Cllr Gurney thanked everyone for coming despite the weather, and praised the pupils’ creative, clever and inspired designs.
“We so appreciate everyone coming out to support the young people,” she said.
“We may all be a bit damp on the outside, but not on the inside, because we’re all now so full of the lovely Christmas spirit.
“So many lovely people have contributed so much, and what amazing decorations these are.
“It’s great to see such creative use of recycled materials.
The decorations are stunning, and I can’t wait to see them on the tree.”
