A WOKINGHAM horticultural business is appealing for volunteers to help make up planters that will be sold to support their chosen charity of the year.
Nearly all of Squire’s 16 Garden Centres will be taking part in the ‘plantathon’ including at their Wokingham branch.
Teams at each centre will work with their chosen charity volunteer helpers, and would love customers to join them for what they say will be a fun and rewarding day planting up containers.
Wokingham Squires’ Garden Centre’s chosen charity is CLASP Wokingham, a self-advocacy group for people with learning disabilities.
Money raised by the project will go to support the group’s activities.
Sarah Squire, chairman of Squire’s Garden Centres, said: “We are looking forward to hosting our plantathon initiative once again this year.
“It’s a wonderful way to welcome the autumn planting season, while marking the start of our work with our local charity partners for the next 12 months.
“We would be delighted to welcome visitors to our centres to get involved and help plant up their own pot, or just to pop along and show their support for our colleagues and charity representatives, as they make aim to plant – and sell – as many containers as possible, raising funds for some truly important local charities who do such valuable work within our communities.”
The completed pots will be available for customers to purchase on the day, with profits from the sale of each container going to each centre’s Charity of the Year,
Wokingham customers are encouraged to come along and support the event, and to chat and ask questions.
They are also very welcome, say Squires, to pitch in and plant up pots too, in aid of CLASP Wokingham.
Each container will include a selection of autumn bedding plants, a centerpiece feature plant, and some daffodil bulbs to bring added cheer in spring.
Early September is the perfect time to plant spring-flowering bulbs, says the team.
The completed containers will be available to purchase for £12 each, planted up with peat-free compost..
The event takes place at Squires Wokingham, Heathlands Road, on Friday, September 6, from 10am until 3pm.
