Wokingham MP Clive Jones, has paid tribute to Ming Campbell, a former leader of the Liberal Democrat party and MP for North East Fife for nearly 30 years.
Speaking in the House of Commons on yesterday (October 14), he described Ming as a “warm and generous friend” to his family and colleagues in Westminster.
Ming Campbell frequently visited Clive in Wokingham in support of his campaigns ahead of becoming the constituency’s member of parliament.
The Wokingham MP went on to describe the late Liberal Democrat leader as a “distinguished advocate”, a “savvy street campaigner” and a “brilliant athlete”, referring to the many medals Ming won as an athlete prior to his parliamentary career. Closing his speech, Clive referred to Ming as “one of the nicest people to ever lead a political party”, a sentiment shared by the many MPs that came together to pay tribute in Westminster.
Clive said: “Ming Campbell was a dear friend of mine who visited Wokingham on many occasions.
“During one particular visit, a local journalist asked Ming why he visited the constituency as often as he did.
“He quickly responded, “I have invested so much in this young man. I am determined to see that he is successful.” One year later, this investment paid off.
“Ming Campbell will be warmly remembered by me, my colleagues and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.”
Jones told Wokingham Today he was planning to attend Ming’s funeral in Scotland today (Wednesday).
