Celebrations were in full swing at Austen House Care Home as one of its residents, Bridget “Delia” Dunne, marked her 100th birthday in style.
Bridget was joined by staff, relatives, friends, and fellow residents for a special lunch, followed by a birthday cake prepared by the home’s chef, Ainsworth. The highlight of the day came when Bridget received a personalised congratulatory card from His Majesty the King.
Born in County Kilkenny in 1926, Bridget moved to London in 1946, forging a career as a Shop Auditor before later working for 3M until she retired at 65. A long-time resident of Bracknell and Reading, she is known for her love of Bridge and her independent spirit.

Reflecting on her milestone, Bridget said: “I had a great birthday and feel good. Receiving the card from the King was such a wonderful surprise. Thank you to everyone here at the Austen House team who made me feel special.”
Her son, John, added: “Bridget is and has been a fantastic mother and friend to so many over the past hundred years. It is wonderful to be with her on this very special day and show how proud she makes us feel.”
Katherine, General Manager of Austen House, said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating a truly remarkable woman as she reaches this amazing milestone. Bridget is such a popular resident who always has an interesting tale to tell, and we look forward to hearing many more as she breaks into her next century.”
