A GROUP of talented crafters has created a small mountain of bobble hats, which they are generously sharing with the borough.
The Barkham Hookers crochet group are well known in Wokingham for their post box toppers, yarn bombing, and impressive fundraising success in support of The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
This festive season they have been busy making more than 150 colourful bobble hats, which they are giving away free to anyone that needs one.
Placed on Hatmas Trees around the borough, the hats make unusual, colourful Christmas decorations – as well as providing protection from the cold.
People who need a hat are invited to take one, either for themselves or for someone else short of warm winter headwear.
Members of CLASP Wokingham very much admired the hats during their Coffee Shop drop-in at The Mosaic Cafe.
Susan said: “It was really exciting to see the hats on the tree, it felt very Christmassy.
“And when Rev Catherine offered me one to take home I was very pleased because it really is so cosy and colourful.”
Barkham Hookers founder Gaynor White, said: “It’s the first time we’ve done this.
“I saw last year that someone else had set up a Hatmas Tree, and decided that we could do it too.
“I asked the Hookers to get crocheting just after last Christmas, and they’ve produced between 150 and 200 bobble hats.
“These have proved to be very popular – so much so that the FBC tree was bare yesterday and I need to restock it.”
Gaynor is asking anyone wishing to make a donation should give to First Days Children’s Charity Christmas Appeal, providing toys and festive fun for less fortunate youngsters in the borough.
“People have been saying how much they love the hats,” said Gaynor.
“And they’re certainly disappearing.
“I do hope they are going to people who really need them.
Hatmas trees can be seen at the FBC Centre, Finchampstead, The Mosaic Cafe in the Bradbury Centre, The Cornerstone building on Norrey’s Avenue, All Saints Church, and the Wade Day Centre.
