ELIZABETH Corse, who leads People, Planet, Pint Wokingham says:
“WHEN I set up PPP two and a half years ago, it was to find a group of locals who, like me, were concerned about our environment.
“They are now not only friends, but part of my circle of influence.
“We recently watched a truly mesmerising, sobering and hopeful film together, at Everyman Cinema.”
Ocean with David Attenborough, was released on his 99th birthday.
‘After almost 100 years on the planet, I now understand the most important place on Earth is not on land, but at sea,’ he said.
“My two boys came along and saw the horror of what bottom trawling does to ocean floors.
“They also learned that it’s not only legal, but subsidised.
“They were saddened to see giant boats, operating as floating factories, stealing Antarctic krill from right under penguins’ beaks.
“But they also saw life at its most mesmerising, in coral reefs, sea grass meadows and ocean jungles.
“But how quickly the ocean bounces back when protected from profit – as seen at Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument.
“What comes across in the film is the power of people, and how fast the ocean recovers.
“Yet right now, less than 3% of the world’s oceans is protected.
“Governments will head to Nice next month, with an opportunity to agree on further protection, and on banning the worst fishing practices.
“See the film if you can, spread the word, and act for the ocean by making your views known to the government.”
