IF there was a Cubs’ badge for volunteering, commitment, dedication, service, hiking, parade organising and how best to cook sausages around a campfire, then Diana Coates would certainly be awarded one.
The badge would also recognise Diana’s abilities in bush craft, science, kayaking, climbing, safeguarding and making sure children had loads of fun. The only problem is the former school teacher and Akela leading the 4th Wokingham Cubs would need a much larger jumper
Mother of four, Jenny Helyer is just one of the hundreds of parents who over the years, has nothing but praise for Diana’s role with the troop which she has served for the past 36 years.
“All my four kids have participated in and have loved the cubs,” explained Jenny.
“Along with other parents, we just want to thank Diana for her commitment, dedication, for the skills and knowledge she has taught the children plus fun and games she’s provided them with week in, week out.
“From hikes, to fantastic cub camps, St George’s day parades, badge work plus a focus on activities for the community, Diana truly is an unsung hero.”
Jenny added that Diana has organised various events where cubs from other neighbourhoods have met up with the 4th Wokingham troop with many forming long friendships.
“In one sense, what she does could be described as a service but it is far more than that,” added Jenny.
“Diana has a big heart for everyone, especially children. She is always looking at ways to encourage them and develop their individual talents and interests. She works tirelessly behind the scenes, encouraging other adults to get involved with the cubs.
“Diana is a godsend and as parents we owe her a lot. She is truly a Community Volunteer of the Year.”
