Clive Jones, the MP for Wokingham, has planted a cross in the Constituency Garden of Remembrance in Westminster in honour of a soldier remembered in Arborfield Cross, and all service members from Wokingham that dedicated their lives for our freedom.
Ahead of this year’s Remembrance Day, the Wokingham MP paid tribute to Christopher George Brean, who was born in Warfield Berkshire in 1896 to parents Johan Smith Brean and Ann Brean.
Christopher then enlisted in the army, where he joined the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Berkshire Regiment and began his initial training in England.
Private Brean then completed his training in France and was subsequently sent to the front, where Christopher was killed in action on 10 March 1915 during World War One.
The information on Christopher’s life and his family has been kindly provided by Barry Salter of the Arborfield Local History Society.
With no known grave, Christopher is now commemorated on the war memorial at Arborfield Cross and in the Le Touret Memorial in northern France.
The remembrance garden at the Palace of Westminster provides a space for all 650 Members of Parliament to pay tribute to service members from their constituencies, where the Wokingham MP planted Christopher Brean’s cross alongside Andy Bailey, the Parish Councillor for Arborfield & Newlands and Andy’s wife, Anita Bailey.
Jones said: “We must never forget the sacrifices that service members like Private Brean made for our country.
The peace and freedoms we have today are thanks to veterans and those who gave their lives, and I am proud to honour Christopher and all those from Wokingham that fought for our country.”
