A BOROUGH charity store and training hub for young people with additional needs is busy getting ready for the festive season.
Jac In A Box sells donated items of toys, games, clothes, bric-a-brac and books while at the same time giving young people opportunities to learn retail and serving skills to give them confidence and qualifications when looking for work.
Youngsters spend time at the store, sorting, serving and engaging with the public, while working towards certificates – hard evidence for future employers of the experience they have gained.
Some of the team are currently busy on an upcycling project, turning suitable fabrics that come into the store into new items to be sold at this year’s Wokingham Winter Carnival.
Volunteer, and organiser of the project Elaine Orr said: “We’re using donated fabrics and nearly new bedding, along with ribbons and buttons, to make some lovely Christmas items.”
The team is creating re-usable gift bags made from Christmas fabric, make-up bags, hot chocolate cones, plant pot covers, honey gift packs, Christmas labels, and scrunchies.
“You can never have too many of those,” Ms Orr added.
“I have some eager young helpers sewing with me in our craft room.
“We’re working hard to make lots of items to sell at the carnival.
“There will be book bundles too, games, and of course, plenty of Christmas jumpers.”
