A WOKINGHAM grant-giving charity wants to make sure that youngsters from low income families can enjoy the same trips, clubs and extra-curricular activities as their peers.
As teachers throughout the borough prepare educational trips and activities for the year ahead, Wokingham United Charities (WUC) reminds them its Bright Futures Fund is there to help ensure that every child can take part.
A London theatre trip, a climbing adventure in Wales, or a Roman history trip to Bath; all of these can be life enhancing – but expensive.
Wokingham United Charities provides a number of different grants to individuals and organisations throughout the borough, its mission to relieve poverty and enhance the quality of life of people in need.
Its Bright Futures Fund is dedicated to supporting young people who might otherwise be unable to participate in after school activities, enriching their education through trips, clubs, music and sports lessons.
Following previous requests WUC has paid for summer craft and sewing courses for local disadvantaged children, enabled a student to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award, provided mental health workshops for after school clubs, and enabled two students of Spanish to join a week-long language course in Barcelona.
Amy Garstang, grants manager at Wokingham United Charities, said: “Young people shouldn’t have to miss out on school trips, clubs or other activities because of a financial situation they or their families often have no control over.
“Bright Futures aims to bridge the gap, providing access to enriching activities that are integral to children’s growth and development.”
A grant of more than £20,000 from Wokingham Borough Council this year, and partnership with the Hardship Alliance, enables WUC to help children access a wide range of school trips, club membership, sports equipment, instrument rental, and participation fees.
Whatever their interest, young people from lower income families can be helped to turn their wish into a reality, and WUC can make it possible for them to join this year’s school trip.
Applications can be made through the organisation’s website, but must come from a professional referrer, such as a teacher, youth group leader, sports trainer or relevant local charity.
Families can’t apply directly, but can ask their school or club to apply for a grant for their child on their behalf.
