A BARNSLEY man has been handed a football banning order and hundreds of pounds in fines after taking part in a pitch invasion and a string of other offences.
Brandon Bashforth, aged 28, of High Street, Grimethorpe, Barnsley, pleaded guilty to assault by beating, entering the playing area of a football pitch, and using threatening words and behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.
It follows a hearing at Reading Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, February 25, where he was issued a three‑year football banning order, along with a £600 fine for assault, a £100 fine for entering the pitch, £200 in victim compensation, and £85 in costs.
During the Reading FC vs Barnsley FC League 1 match on Saturday, January 24,Bashforth entered the pitch and attempted to reach the home supporters’ section.
When a steward tried to stop him, he pushed the steward and headbutted him in the face causing the victim to sustain a minor injury.
Bashforth was arrested on January 24 and charged the following day.
Dedicated Football Officer PC Steve Mountain said: “Violence towards stewards, staff or supporters will never be tolerated.
“This banning order sends a clear message that those who choose to involve themselves in disorder at football matches will face significant consequences.”
He explained: “A football banning order will prevent Bashforth from attending regulated football matches across the UK and can also include restrictions on travel, particularly during international fixtures.
“They are a powerful tool that helps protect fans, staff and the wider community by keeping those intent on causing trouble away from our stadiums.
“Football should be a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone, and we will continue working with clubs to identify offenders and take robust action against them.”
