A PRIMARY school has asked its parents to stop turning up at the school gates at lunchtime with fast food for its pupils.
Hawkedon Primary School in Lower Earley sent a note saying the practice of bringing the treats for lunches went against its policies.
Headteacher Gareth O’Shea said in the note that “It is not acceptable for children to be given fast food, such as McDonald’s, as this is against the ethos of our healthy school”.
He added: “It has been brought to my attention that some parents are bringing fast food to the front office to give to their children for their lunch.
“As you will be aware, we are a school that wants all of our children to be mentally and physically fit. Our children participate in physical activity for a minimum of two hours per week and we regularly discuss how to live in a fit and healthy way.”
The note also reminded parents that school dinners were carefully made so that “children can receive a nutritionally healthy meal”. Parents who wanted to provide packed lunches should, he added, “give their children healthy lunches that will aid with their growth and development”.
“We expect our schools to encourage health eating and follow a curriculum that promotes a healthy lifestyle.
And Wokingham Borough Council backed the move.
Cllr Pauline Helliar-Symons, executive member for children’s services, said: “It’s fantastic to see that so many of our schools have been historically recognised with a Healthy Schools Award for their work in promoting positive health messages and encouraging healthy choices.
“So many of our youngsters in the Borough are overweight, even obese, and that is so unhealthy for them.
“I’m delighted that Hawkedon has taken this action.
“It doesn’t take long to prepare a healthy meal.”
