Wokingham Town Football Club fell agonizingly short of lifting the Combined Counties League Cup last night (Tuesday), going down 3-4 against Berkshire neighbours Windsor & Eton at Cobham FC.
The winning goal for Windsor, who have already been promoted to the next level of non-league football after gaining league promotion through the play-offs, came from the penalty spot in the 9th minute of added time at the end of the match after the Sumas had equalised on the stroke of 90 minutes, and had appeared to have done enough to send the tie to penalties.
Wokingham never recovered from conceding a goal in the opening minutes of the match, and were 1-3 down at half time, but they had chances to win what was their first ever appearance in a league cup final in their 150 years since being formed, including a missed penalty and hitting the woodwork.
Club president Mark Ashwell told Wokingham Today: “It was emotional, but I am hopeful that the team we have assembled this season will come back stronger for the 2026/27 season.
“Thank you to every Town supporter who made the trip, including a group of youngsters from our youth section who never stopped encouraging the team throughout the match.
“It was really appreciated by the players.”
Town’s goals last night came via club captain Sean Moore, James Beauchamp, and Sam Lynskey.
