A CHURCH in Wokingham is preparing to take visitors on a journey through the Christmas nativity story.
All Saints Church is inviting people to come and enjoy their festive event.
The group has had to do things differently this year, because the main church building is closed due to major refurbishment of the premises.
It is due to re- open, as a church, and as a flexible café space and arts venue in the spring of 2023.
In the meantime, instead of their usual crib service, organisers are preparing a Christmas Experience for visitors, at the nearby Cornerstone building.
A cast of volunteers is ready to become characters from the nativity story, and rooms are being transformed into the various stages that people will pass through on their journey to Bethlehem.
“It’s actually been good having to change what we do this year,” says Revd Hannah Higginson.
“We’ve had to be quite creative, and come up with new ideas.
“We want it to be a real Christmas experience.
“We’re very excited about the event.”
“People will get to meet the wise men, and can talk with them about following the star to find the baby Jesus.
“Then they’ll meet the shepherds, and can take selfies with them.”
Visitors to the event will also make a craft for the baby Jesus, and will get to meet King Herod, before making their way to see the holy family.
“The experience is loosely based on the crib service we normally hold,” says Revd Hannah.
“So it’s aimed at families primarily, but anyone is welcome to come, as a group or an individual.
“It takes about an hour, and there’s a cup of tea at the end.”
“We don’t have any animals in the experience – this time.
“But we are very keen to have a real baby in our nativity scene.
“We’re hopeful that someone will be willing to join us, whose baby is six months old or younger.
“If that’s you, please get in touch.
“Lots of people have now signed up to take part, and we’re excited to share this Christmas Experience.
“Come to Bethlehem with us.”
The event takes place at The Cornerstone, Norreys Avenue, on Thursday, December 22 and on Friday, December 23.
It starts at 9.30am on both days, with half hour arrival slots available until the last start time of 3.30pm.
Visitors need to book their place for the free event.
