Wokingham has been named one of the happiest places to live in Great Britain, according to a new national ranking.
The Berkshire market town was placed 14th in a list of the 20 happiest places to live in the country, compiled by lifestyle website Rest Less using data from Rightmove’s Happy at Home Index survey. More than 19,000 people took part in the research, which looked at factors including community spirit, access to green spaces and residents’ overall sense of belonging.
Wokingham was the only Berkshire location to feature in the top 20 and was one of several South East towns to make the list. The ranking was topped by Skipton in North Yorkshire, followed by Richmond upon Thames and Camden in London.
Researchers highlighted Wokingham’s strong community feel, independent high street, surrounding countryside and historic character as key reasons behind its inclusion.
The report described the town as a “picturesque market town” where residents enjoy a strong sense of community, whether browsing local shops or walking in the countryside. It also pointed to Wokingham’s Tudor heritage and relatively low crime levels.
The latest recognition adds to a growing list of accolades for the town. Wokingham was previously reported to have some of the best living conditions in the UK and has regularly featured highly in national quality-of-life surveys.
Other locations to make the top 20 included Sevenoaks, Winchester, Horsham and Leigh-on-Sea, while Scotland, Wales and London were also represented throughout the rankings.
The survey forms part of Rightmove’s annual Happy at Home Index, which measures how people feel about the areas in which they live rather than focusing solely on property prices or economic factors.
