A fascinating glimpse of Wokingham’s past is set to come under the hammer later this month.
An oil on canvas painting depicting Wokingham Guild Hall, dated 1817, is set to be auctioned in Newbury by Dreweatts.
The painting is estimated to achieve between £600 and £800.Wokingham Guild Hall once stood on what is now Wokingham Town Hall. It was built in 1612 and, after falling into a state of disrepair, was demolished in 1858.Brandon Lindberg, head of British and European Art at auctioneers Dreweatts, told Wokingham Today: “We are delighted to be offering this charming view of Wokingham.
“The Guildhall was demolished after it fell into disrepair, so this picture is a rare glimpse into a long lost scene.
“Naïve pictures, such as this, are usually painted by amateur artists or tradesmen and it may well be based on an engraving.”
Wokingham Town Council has several similar paintings of the Guild Hall.
A spokesperson for Wokingham Town Council said they’d give pride of place to the painting, should the new owner wish to display it in public.
The auction in Newbury will take place on Wednesday, October 18.
