Group celebrates 50 years of 1st Woodley Boys’ Brigade

A BOROUGH youth group celebrated 50 years of serving their local community with an awards ceremony this month.

Around 40 members of 1st Woodley Boys’ Brigade and their families gathered to mark their special birthday, with refreshments, music, and a specially made commemorative sponge cake.

Leader of 1st Woodley Boys’ Brigade Aaron Pritchard, said: “The event started with our awards ceremony, followed by speeches from long standing members of staff, and of course a cutting of the cake by company captain Dylan Harman.”

The Boys’ Brigade is a Christian-based youth organisation, providing fun activities, encouraging new friendships and offering challenges for boys aged five to 17.

Members can take part in games, crafts, competitions, drama and cooking, with badges to gain and lots to do outdoors in the summer, including weekend and summer camps.

“At the awards night, each of the sections had a display item with a link to the 50 years theme,” continued Mr Pritchard.

“The group is a great place to learn life skills, and to find some fun time away from phones.

“The boys work together on lots of projects, including fundraising events such as joining in with Christchurch car wash.”

The 1st Woodley Company is part of the Mid-Southern Battalion, and involved with the youth programme at Christ Church, a Methodist/United Reformed Church, in Woodley.

The Company has four age groups all meeting on Wednesday nights in term time at the church on Crockhamwell Road.

New members are always welcome.
