A WOMAN believed to be in her twenties was seriously injured after a road traffic accident near Wokingham station earlier today.
The incident happened as we went to press and details were still emerging.
It is not yet known how the accident occurred, but it involved the woman and an articulated lorry from a London brick merchants at the corner of Station Road and Station Approach.
After the accident, she was left with life-threatening injuries and was taken to John Radcliffe Hospital for treatment.
The incident happened around 2pm on Thursday, November 5 and saw at least nine emergency vehicles attend the scene. A rapid response vehicle, two ambulance officers, and the air ambulance car had been sent to the scene.
Due to adverse weather conditions, the Air Ambulance was unable to take off, resulting in a vehicle being sent in its place.
Police cordoned off the area, erecting a tarpaulin screen around the woman, enabling emergency services to treat her.
Roads around the railway station were closed for several hours, causing traffic problems for many motorists. Station Road, Shute End, Wellington Road, Barkham Road and Station Link Road were all shut causing tailbacks all through the borough.
Thames Valley Police tweeted to warn drivers to avoid the area.
They said: “Officers are currently dealing with a serious RTC [Road Traffic Collision] in Station Road, Wokingham involving a lorry and a pedestrian. Road is blocked, pls avoid.”
Reading Buses, which runs bus services between Reading and Wokingham through its Lion and Leopard services, diverted services to avoid the worst of the accident.
Pavements surrounding the accident were closed to pedestrians, although local residents were allowed access.
