A MAIN road through Sonnning and Charvil is to be closed for up to six weeks to allow water works to take place.
Thames Water has announced that its engineers will start work to replace a water main on Charvil Lane on Monday, June 11.
As a result, sections of Charvil Road – which links the A4 to Sonning and the Thames bridge – between Long Garth and Long Barn will be closed to through traffic for up to six weeks.
During the works, which will replace a 375 metre stretch of pipe, a diversion will be in place. Thames Water said that this will be clearly signposted and has been approved by Wokingham Borough Council.
Thames Water added that the existing pipe will be replaced with a new plastic one which is stronger and less prone to leaks and bursts. It says that this reduces the risk of interruptions to water supplies for customers who get their water via the pipe and also reduces the likelihood of emergency roadworks in the future.
Thames Water project manager Jon Wickens said: “Although we appreciate our work will cause some delays, feedback from our customers is they want to see us investing money and upgrading our ageing network of pipes to reduce leaks and bursts.
“They want reliable water supplies that are fit for the future so it’s vital we replace the old pipes.”
Thames Water said that residents living close to the work have been notified in writing.
