A LONG-AWAITED public convenience will finally be installed on Sunday morning – causing a road closure in the process.
Residents of Woodley have been calling for a toilet to be installed in the Crockhamwell Road precinct for a number of years and the Town Council decided to spend a bit more than a penny to make the facility a reality.
Although initial works have been carried out to prepare the ground, the actual loo has yet to be placed in situ.
This changes on Sunday morning and Crockhamwell Road will be shut to traffic from 5.30am.
There is little chance of the public convenience being an inconvenience though: contractors Danfo expect the work to be completed by 9am.
In a letter to residents, site manager Colin Lawes said: “Access to all properties will still remain available, although the car park to Waitrose will have limited access, one entrance in and out.
“The works on site is a brief operation and noise will be kept to a minimum.”
Cllr Keith Baker, leader of Woodley Town Council, promised that the early morning plumbing would be carried out as quietly as possibly, in a bid to be as easy as Sunday morning.
He told The Wokingham Paper: “On Sunday, February 17, the new public toilet will be lowered into position at the Crockhamwell Road end of the precinct.
“Unfortunately this will necessitate the closure of this part of the road from 5.30am with the objective of opening it up again at 9am, subject to completion of the work.
“We apologise to local residents for any inconvenience and the contractor has indicated they will attempt to keep noise to the minimum.
“Once the toilet is positioned work can then be commenced in the coming weeks to connect up the various utilities to make the toilet operational.”
