IT is often claimed the mart of letter writing has been lost to email and social media.
But residents in Winnersh have had their faith in the power of the pen restored thanks to a letter which has arrived in the area.
The official looking correspondence alleges to have come from the Southern Gas Networks.
It warns of “significant disruption” as a result of upgrading the gas network between Old Forest Road and Gazelle Close.
However, it claims the news will be “received relatively well” by residents in Winnersh as they “are used to it.”
Then, in an explanation that would be worthy of a Carry On Gasworks script, the letter adds SGN staff would need to install safety valves attached to “industry standard A-Holes.”
It goes on to say: “These A-Holes were not bored big enough for the flow of gas we have encountered in Winnersh.
“Our intention is that we will make repairs to the A-Holes by boring them wider and holding them in place with L-Bows. As agreed with OFGEN we have conducted an extensive training awareness drive throughout our employee base to ensure that our engineers understand the importance of knowing their A-Holes from their L-Bows.”
Locals in Winnersh soon twigged the letter was fake when they saw it was signed by Gaz Leighky, Deputy Head of Infrastructre at Southern Gas Networks and that is was dated April 1.
The letter was posted on social media where it was met good naturedly.
One member wrote: “Had me going… Nice one! My blood pressure began to rocket when I read that we will be OK because we are used to it!!! Hahaha!”
Another added: “Love it. Just the thing to get folk cross – just look at the date stamp and the sender.”
