The Lovely Debbie McGee faced sterner criticism from the Strictly Come Dancing judges tonight for her quickstep, but still received bouquets of praise for her movie-themed routine.
WARNING: Contains mild spoilers for Strictly Come Dancing week three – if you don’t want to know the score, look away now.
With her dancing partner, Giovanni Pernice, the pair dazzled the Strictly dancefloor with Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off from the film Shall We Dance? Their theme was part of the annual movie week contest and saw Susan Calman pretend to be Wonder Woman, while the Revd Richard Coles used the cult 1980 movie Flash Gordon for his inspiration.
But we are focused on our local contestant: Debbie, who lives in Wargrave and presents a weekly show on BBC Radio Berkshire, slipped down the leaderboard after receiving some criticism from the judging panel.
Newcomer Shirley Ballas warned Debbie that she need to be more like a beautiful swan while she moves around while Craig Revel Horwood said that Debbie and Giovanni had broken the 10 second rule: on the dance floor, partners should never be more than 10 seconds away holding each other.
However, it was not all criticism.
Darcey Bushell said that Debbie was a “good surprise” and was “working hard” to produce dances of good quality.
And Bruno Tonioli gushed that the dance was “Light, frothy, glossy” and that the couple “got it spot on! Love it!”
There was also praise for the way in which Debbie held her head high while on the floor.
The judges have Debbie 29 points in total – enough to see her well ahead of some others on the Strictly dancefloor. But her survival in the contest relies on the general public voting for her.
The Strictly judges scores:
- Bruno: 8
- Shirley: 7
- Craig: 6
- Darcey: 8
