A CHARITY in Reading is once again inviting residents to swap their beds for a night under the stars in aid of tackling homelessness in the town.
Launchpad is once again raising funds to support its efforts helping those facing homelessness through the Big Sleep Out.
Participants forego their comfy beds and sleep out in the meadow by Whiteknights Campus.
The event is set to take place on the University of Reading Campus, where attendees will begin with an evening of entertainment, including live music, talks from Launchpad staff and clients, a raffle, and a hot meal.
It is the 18th annual outing for the event in a year which has seen a 30% increase on demand for services provided by Launchpad.
The charity has supported those facing homelessness since 1979 through the provision of signposting of useful resources, providing drop-in sessions for legal advice, temporary housing, and skills development.
It provided help for more then 1,400 people last year, including those sleeping rough, people facing unlawful eviction, and those struggling with issues such as debt, addiction, and problems with mental health.
Fiona Keyte, Fundraising Manager at Launchpad, said, “We can’t guarantee that people who take part will have a comfortable night – or get much sleep.
“But we are certain that anyone that takes part will have a memorable night and understand why we work so hard to prevent people from becoming homeless.”
“Our services at Launchpad are a lifeline to over 1,400 local people every year.
“We would love people to join #TeamLaunchpad for the Big Sleep Out and help us raise £40,000 to fund our vital work.”
Registration for the Big Sleep Out is £24 per participant, or £22 if signing up before the end of May.
Launchpad ask that each participant raises a minimum of £250, with fundraising guides proved to those who register.
The event takes place on the University of Reading’s Whiteknights campus on Saturday, July 6.
