A SELF-ADVOCACY group for people with learning disabilities in the Wokingham Borough is holding a variety of events for its members in October.
Sessions include movie nights, coffee mornings, a reading group, dancing, and crafts.
For members who want to get active, there are cycling and swim sessions.
At the group’s discussion group, Take Notice, members will be highlighting issues that affect people with a learning disability.
Many regular activities take place at The Bradbury Centre, Wokingham, but swim sessions are at the town’s Carnival Hub Leisure Centre.
Social events such as Movie Mates, Coffee Shop, Book Corner, Dancing to Music, Craft Club, and Evening Drop-In provide an opportunity to socialise and make friends.
Members can learn and improve their cycling skills at the group’s Active Sessions run by Woky Bikes 4 All, in conjunction with My Journey Wokingham.
Disabled swim sessions, open to all with a disability, take place twice weekly at Wokingham Leisure Centre.
Take Notice, Puzzle Club and Choir continue through October. along with a meeting with The Learning Disability Partnership Board (LDPB) of which CLASP is a member.
“There are some some interesting and informative road shows coming up,” said CLASP’s independence supporter Michele Munro.
“On Tuesday, October 3, we will be talking about feeling safe, which is so important, and something which everyone should be able to do, regardless of ability or disability.”
The group’s Take Notice session on Friday, October 5, highlights mental health and how to get help.
“Figures suggest that, like physical health, mental health inequalities exist for those with a learning disability,” said Ms Munro.
“In fact the Mental Health Foundation recently said that mental health problems among people with a learning disability are often overlooked, underdiagnosed and left untreated due to poor understanding, awareness, and evidence.”
CLASP is chosen charity of the year at Squires, Wokingham.
“On Thursday,October 19, we will kick off Christmas together with them at the store,” added Ms Munro.
“There’s going to be plenty to get everyone in the festive mood, including our fabulous CLASP choir.”
At the end of the month, on October 30, the group will hold a Hallowe’en disco with DJ Stu.
Swim classes on Mondays and Fridays run from 1pm to 3pm, costing £1.60, but carers go free.
