Plenty of Reading players produced encouraging performances as they drew 0-0 with Aston Villa at Madejski Stadium.
Home debutants Emi Martinez, Matt Miazga and Nelson Oliveira all impressed but none of the three subs could make the desired difference as the game ended level.
REACTION: Every word from boss Jose Gomes after the goalless draw
EMI MARTINEZ: Made a smart early save to deny El Ghazi before an acrobatic stop late on to earn a clean sheet. Dealt with in the air and with the ball at his feet – 8* (star man)
ANDY YIADOM: Fortunate to get away with conceding possession on a couple of occasions at the back but not a bad display – 6

MATT MIAZGA: Missed a chance to score just before half-time but helped organise the defence well – 7
LIAM MOORE: Generally dealt well with the Villa attacking threat and made numerous clearances – 7
TYLER BLACKETT: Added some balance to the defence and while he didn’t get forwards much, defended solidly – 7
ANDY RINOMHOTA: Helped Reading out of some tricky positions with his drive and composure on the ball – 8
JOHN SWIFT: Picked in a deeper midfield role but produced lots of brilliant set pieces which were not converted – 7
CALLUM HARRIOTT: Looked eager to impress on his latest return to the side but struggled to produce any real quality in the final third before being subbed – 6
LEWIS BAKER: Looked confident in a more advanced role behind the striker to produce his best display so far in a Reading shirt – 8
OVIE EJARIA: Lively first half with some neat touches around the box but faded after the break – 7
NELSON OLIVEIRA: A real presence throughout the first half and came close to breaking the deadlock on a couple of occasions. Booked for diving and subbed off injured – 7
SUBS:
OMAR RICHARDS: Brought on to play left wing but had little impact – 5
SONE ALUKO: Struggled to get into the game and fired a shot well wide when he first came on – 5
YAKOU MEITE: Worked hard up front for the final 20 minutes but could not make the difference in the attacking third – 5
