The Sumas are hoping a little bit of FA Cup magic will rub off on them when they host near neighbours Binfield in the Preliminary Round of this season’s Emirates FA Cup under the Lowther Road lights on Friday evening.
An icon of football in Wokingham, Terry Brown, is set to be welcomed to the club, and will be introduced to the Wokingham & Emmbrook players before the match.
Brown will forever be part of FA Cup history in the town.
In November 1982, he was a talented young striker. Three years earlier he had become the first player to have ever cost Wokingham Town FC a fee when he joined the club from Hayes.
During the early part of the 1982/83 season Wokingham Town had battled through the early qualifying rounds of the FA Cup with wins against Andover, Whyteleafe, Staines Town, Kingstonian and Leatherhead.
Their reward for reaching the First Round of the FA Cup for the first and only time was a prestigious home tie against Cardiff City – who were leading Division Three at the time.
Brown played in that match, which Wokingham Town drew 1-1 at Finchampstead Road before losing 0-3 in the replay. Town had scored through George Torrance in the 16th minute before being pegged back by a David Tong strike just 12 minutes from time.
He lives locally and often visits Lowther Road. He’s best known for his managerial stints at Margate, Aldershot Town, Hayes, Basingstoke Town, and most notably at AFC Wimbledon where he guided the Dons to the Football League in 2011.
Mark Ashwell, President of Wokingham & Emmbrook FC, said: “There are a few of us associated with the club today who fondly remember Terry’s exploits in the amber and black.”
The match on Friday, August 18, kicks off at 7.45pm. A bumper attendance is predicted.
