A FIRE at the re3 recycling centre in Reading was caused by batteries.
On Monday, October 9, Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to the Smallmead site to deal with the fire.
Crews from Whitley Wood, Caversham Road and Wokingham Road were sent to the scene, alongside two Officers.
They were tasked with tackling the blaze which affected five tonnes of carboard – something that took them four hours to do.
They had to use breathing apparatus, extinguishing the blaze and then ventilate the area. No one was injured and the site remained closed.
Now re3 is reminding people to dispose of batteries correctly.
They say the small power cells can catch fire if they are crushed or damaged and, as such, should never be disposed of in a bin. Instead, they want people to use battery banks in supermarkets or at the recycling centres.
