LIKE many people, Graham Powell stepped up when a local charity asked if he could help out.
He imagined he would only be needed for a few weeks, a month or two perhaps before someone else took over.
But six years later, Graham has finally stepped down from his role as a Trustee at The Wokingham Volunteer Centre, during which he was also Chair for four years.
The man who never envisaged he would stay for long, has been credited with leading the charity through some difficult and changing times.
Nick Fellows, the charity’s Chief Officer, who has nominated Graham as Community Volunteer of the Year, said he helped ensure it remained true to its purpose of supporting other charities to attract new volunteers and running its own community transport and basic gardening services.
“Graham was quite certain when he stepped forward that he wouldn’t be staying very long,” smiles Nick.
“However, there is no doubt that Graham’s leadership qualities and his considered and thoughtful approach have played a major part in the continued development and success of The Wokingham Volunteer Centre.
“He has skilfully managed succession among the Trustees by bringing through the current Chair to take over the reins seamlessly.
“During Covid, the Wokingham Volunteer Centre played a prominent role in the Borough’s community response and Graham reinforced his personal input through his role as a gardening volunteer. In addition to that, Graham provides support to a number of individuals in the Borough and also leads another small charity.”
While Graham has stopped down from his leadership role, he remains a gardening volunteer and continues to volunteer with a local charity.
“Graham is a man who deserves to be honoured for the hard work and leadership he has shown during his time at the Wokingham Volunteer Centre. He continues as a gardening volunteer and also works with a small charity helping others. He always thinks of other people,” added Nick.
