A BIG thank you to Wokingham has been issued after a fundraising group held a successful sale on Saturday.
Members of The Rotary Club on Wokingham were in Market Place, offering crocus bulbs and collecting donations for its End Polio Now campaign. And thanks to shoppers’ generosity, everything went.
Rotary Clubs across the world are backing the initiative, which is its top priority.
When they started, there were more than 1,000 cases a day in 125 countries, with children dying as a result.
Now, case numbers are down by 99.9%, and the goal is in sight.
To help keep the issue in people’s minds, the Wokingham club recently planted 3,000 purple crocus bulbs in Elms Field, as well as selling the flowers.
James Berkeley, from the club, said: “Early indications are through the generosity of Wokingham residents we raised £170, with all our crocus bags sold – thank you Wokingham.
“End Polio Now is a global initiative aimed at eradicating polio, led by Rotary International.
“The purple crocus serves as a symbol of this campaign, representing hope and the colour of the dye used to mark the fingers of children immunised against polio during vaccination campaigns.”
