A GROUP of art enthusiasts will celebrate their 10th birthday with cake and a lecture.
Dr Paul Roberts, head of the Department of Antiquities at the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, Oxford University, will deliver a talk about Rome, Art and Emperors: the golden age of Roman art, to members of The Arts Society Wokingham.
The event, with a cake cutting ceremony and refreshments, will be attended by national chair of The Arts Society liz Woods, borough mayor Adrian Mather, and Peter McGeown, partner at Clifton Ingram solicitors, who are this year’s sponsors of the Wokingham art appreciation group.
In his lecture Dr Roberts will discuss the lasting effect Rome’s art and architecture lasting effect has had on our own art and culture.
Through its buildings, works of art, sculptures, mosaics, wall-paintings, silver and jewellery, Dr Roberts will trace the history of of the city, looking at Rome’s rise from its mud-hut origins to become the capital city of the Emperors.
In particular, he will focus on Rome’s golden age, which lasted from from 30 BC to AD 200.
Chair of The Wokingham Arts Society Alison Sanders, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have reached 10 years.
“It’s a long time, and we’ve had some difficult challenges, including the pandemic, but we’ve now got more than 200 members.
“We’re a lovely society, very friendly, and with lots of enthusiasm for the arts that we love to share with people.
“We have online events, in person lectures and trips – our next one is to Hatfield House in July – it’s a great social organisation.”
The Arts Society Wokingham meets monthly to hear talks from invited speakers who are experts in their field.
Lectures cover all aspects of the arts, including painting, theatre, music, architecture and photography.
The Society organises group visits to a wide variety of places of historic and artistic interest as well as regular study days which cover topics in more depth.
Lectures are held at Kings Academy, Binfield, on the third Monday of every month, with the exception of August and December.

The 10th anniversary lecture event will take place at Kings Academy, Binfield, on Monday, July 15.
Doors open at 7.15pm.
