Going out for lunch is not something I get a chance to do very often because I am working so when I got the chance to have lunch with my husband and daughter at the Dog and Duck in Emmbrook I jumped at the chance.
We had booked our table for 1pm, the sun was shining and it was a lovely day. The pub has a really nice outside space but we chose to eat inside because I’d forgotten to apply suncream.
Our waitress was lovely and welcoming.
The Dog and Duck offer a special lunchtime menu (Monday – Saturday 11am-5pm) with a selection of British favourites from Mature Cheddar, tomato and farmhouse pickle to Cumberland sausage and mash with caramelised onions, house gravy starting from £5.95.
We chose from the lunch menu and the main menu all choosing to have the halloumi chips which come served with jalapeno ketchup as a starter (£6.95). When we had eaten here before my husband had them and we all loved them (eyes are bigger than my belly), they did not disappoint.
I opted for a light meal following the starter so went for the smashed avocado & spinach served on a toasted muffin, poached egg, hollandaise (£6.50) I also added some honey roast ham (£2.50) this was a lot bigger than I expected and excellent value for money.
It came with two muffins and poached eggs, my only criticism would be that there was a little more hollandaise sauce than needed, but I would definitely choose this meal again.
Mark choose the Dog and Duck club sandwich (£7.95) streaky bacon, free-range chicken, tomato, lettuce served on a choice of white granary, farmhouse bloomer or gluten-free bread and served with skin-on chips. Mark changed these for the sweet potato fries, for a healthier option.
He really enjoyed the sandwich and actually struggled to finish it all.
Tia already had in her head that she wanted a pizza, are there any 15-year-olds out there that eat anything else?
I am not sure how big the pizza was but it was certainly big enough for two to share, I wasn’t sure she’d be able to eat it all.
The pizzas are made from genuine Italian wood-fired dough and all mozzarella is Fior Di Latte. The pizzas start from £8.50 for the Margherita which is what Tia chose. There is a selection of 6 different pizzas but with the option of choosing different toppings, you can make pretty much make it to order.
I normally wouldn’t choose to have a dessert especially at lunchtime and definitely didn’t intend on eating it all but last time we went to the Dog and Duck they had sold out of the double chocolate cookie (£4) served with milk ice cream and toffee sauce and so I just wanted a nibble and ordered one this time for the three of us to share.
I am not a huge chocolate fan and so if something is too rich it puts me off but this cookie was really nice, not too much and the ice cream complimented it really well. I ended up sharing it with Tia.
I know my son Isaac would have loved it, he’s 10.
Overall we had a really lovely lunch at the Dog and Duck, there is something on there to work with everybody’s budget and our waitress was really attentive.
