Residents have reacted after news broke that traffic calming measures will be removed to avoid congestion in Arborfield.
Wokingham borough council announced that they would remove some traffic-calming measures on the diversion route in the Arborfield area on a temporary trial basis.
A spokesperson said: “We’ll soon be closing Eversley Road and Mole Road overnight to remove two “give way” islands – ideally on Thursday May 28 and Friday May 29, but we may postpone, depending on contractor availability.
“Traffic calming at Arborfield Cross remains necessary and will be reinstalled at these locations once the congestion issues are resolved. However, we’ll review their design and how they work before reinstating them.”
The announcement garnered a strong reaction from residents on social media.
One person said: “I do wonder if the Council’s traffic management team would accept responsibility for a wrong decision, leading to increased congestion, accidents, upset drivers, decreased mpg…
“And much more importantly – take this as a lesson learnt and stop reducing speed limits everywhere unless exceedingly and overwhelmingly necessary!!!
“Example: the only place where 20mph is needed is the Wokingham town Market place, yet it is still 30.”
Another added: “This whole scheme was a joke alongside the closing of School Rd under an experimental traffic order. More money down the pan…..perhaps if the council had actually considered people didn’t need forcing to use what’s clearly a quicker route when the bypass opened….heaven forbid you trust the people you are working for!”
One more said: “It should never have been approved in the first place, especially the positioning of some.
WBC too ‘proud’ to concede that they’d got it wrong, so have wrongly been left in place for years.”
