TODAY there will be proclamation ceremony in Wokingham town to officially announce the nation’s new monarch.
The event, hailing King Charles III, will take place at 2pm in Market Place.
Local dignitaries will assemble in front of the RYND café for the first such ceremony in 70 years.
Open to the public, it will be led by the borough mayor, Cllr Caroline Smith, and is a short, solemn announcement. The ceremony itself dates back centuries.
To help manage the expected crowds, there will be temporary road closures between 11.30am and 4pm today, Sunday, September 11. These will be similar to the road closures in place for the Winter Carnival and May Fayre.
Closed roads are:
• Peach Street, between Easthampstead Road and Market Place
• Market Place, between Peach Street and Broad Street
• Broad Street between Market Place and Rose Street
• Market Place, between Peach Street and Denmark Street
• Denmark Street, between Market Place and the entrance to the Denmark Street car park
The alternative route for all southbound traffic shall be via A329 Rectory Road, A329 Wiltshire Road, A329 Peach Street, Easthampstead Road, Heathlands Road, B3439 Nine Mile Ride, A321 Sandhurst Road and A321 Finchampstead Road.
The alternative route for all northbound traffic shall be via Cross Street and Rose Street. More information on the town centre road closure can be found on One Network.
Wokingham Borough Council has also sent a letter has been sent to King Charles III’s Private Secretary sharing the borough’s condolences.
