Reading have confirmed the signing of Conor Masterson on a short-term contract after the defender spent much of pre-season training with the club.
The 27-year-old centre-back has agreed a deal with the Royals until January 2027, having been a free agent since leaving Gillingham at the end of last season.
Masterson had been training with Leam Richardson’s squad throughout the summer and featured in Reading’s final pre-season friendly against Charlton Athletic.
He played 61 minutes of the 3-0 victory at The Valley, having initially come in to help the squad during pre-season.
His future at the Select Car Leasing Stadium had appeared uncertain, with Richardson previously indicating that Masterson was not expected to be offered a contract.
However, after continuing to work with the squad, the defender has now been handed an opportunity to remain with Reading until January.
Richardson said Masterson had impressed him with his attitude and performances during his time around the first-team squad.
“Conor initially came in to train with us, help us with numbers and keep himself fit,” he said.
“He’s been excellent since he walked through the door. His attitude, his professionalism and the level he’s shown every day in training have really impressed us and over that period the situation has developed.
“He’s earned this opportunity. He’s got a lot of experience and he’s a very good character to have around the group.
“We’re pleased that we’ve been able to get something agreed with him through to January and he gives us another strong option defensively.”
Masterson came through Liverpool’s academy before beginning his senior career with Queens Park Rangers.
He has also had spells with Swindon Town, Southend United and Gillingham, making 112 appearances for the latter across three spells.
His arrival gives Richardson another option at centre-back as Reading continue their League One campaign.
