What is believed to be a new record price has been paid for a football programme featuring Wokingham Town Football Club.
A total of £353.44 including fees has been paid for the single sheet edition from the August 1954 Metropolitan League match between Headington United Reserves and Wokingham Town through auction website eBay.
It was priced at one penny on the day.
Headington United subsequently changed its name to Oxford United the following season, with the first team most recently plying its trade in the Championship.
The 1954/55 season marked the first year in the competition for Town, as they faced the reserve teams of the likes of Chelsea, West Ham and Luton Town, as well as fellow Berkshire sides Newbury Town and Windsor & Eton.
Wokingham Town eventually finished the season in 15th of the 16-team league with eight wins from 32 matches – a place ahead of West Ham ‘A’.
The Wokingham Town team that played in that match was Aspinall, Warick, Stevens, Vallance, Thompson, Jackson, Turner, Drew (Capt.), Rideout, Burtwell, and Newton.
In 2021, £292 was paid for a 1957 home programme versus Chelsea ‘A’, which is believed to be the previous highest price.
