TWO MORE pubs in Wokingham have been rewarded for their efforts to be welcoming.
Last week, members of CAMRA Berkshire South East visited the venues to present them with certificates for being finalists in its Community Pub of the Year contest.
While the ultimate winner was The Ship Inn in Peach Street, the group wanted to honour the runners-up.
Kevin Lenton, chairman of the local branch, presented Hattie Gutzman, the landlandy of The Hope and Anchor in Station Road with her certificate, which he said was well-deserved.
The pub is famous for its weekly quiz, live music sessions and a warm welcome to customers be they are 18 or 80.
It sponsors its own football team and has two darts teams and a cribbage team for the less energetic.
And also receiving an honour was Clive McNelly from The White Horse in Easthampstead Road to receive his certificate from the past branch chairman, David Richards.
The group felt that this was another great pub with a solid charitable focus, raising money for various causes as well as providing a venue for meetings – it recently held a fundraising week for Macmillan Cancer Care.
It also sponsors Wokingham & Emmbrook Ladies Football team and has its darts and cribbage teams willing to take on all comers.
It is also a music pub, holding regular music festivals and open mic nights.
A spokesperson for the Berkshire South East Camra branch said: “Well done to these two well-deserving pubs which demonstrates why Wokingham is so lucky in having these great hostelries”.
