A COUPLE from Wokingham took a trip down memory lane last week when they visited a re-development site where they used to live.
Alan and Linda Newport visited 52 Reading Road, which is being turned into two bedsits and seven studio flats for young people in the town, where they used to live between 1964 and 1971.
When the couple saw that their old house was being demolished to make way for the new development, they contacted Wokingham Housing Ltd (WHL) who are developing the site for Loddon Homes.
The couple asked if they could have an old chimney pot from the building as a memento of their happy times at the house.
Linda said, “We have many happy memories of our home and it is wonderful to have a souvenir of the place where we raised our family. We plan to use the chimney pot as a container for plants in our garden.”
Bill Flood, Managing Director of WHL said, “When we received the request from the previous residents of 52 Reading Road, we were delighted to be able to give a new lease of life to an old chimney pot as a new plant pot!
“It was lovely to meet Mr and Mrs Newport, see how beautiful their back garden used to be and sharing with them our scheme for housing and helping young people.
“We will see if any of the new young residents have green fingers like the Newport’s obviously have!”
The house at 52 Reading Road has been demolished to make way for an affordable housing development to help vulnerable young people live in their own homes.
The project is commissioned by Wokingham Borough Council through its wholly-owned housing association subsidiary Loddon Homes, and is due to be completed by March 2018.
