Reading Football Club has warned supporters to expect significant travel disruption when the M4 closes over the weekend of its home fixture against Notts County.
The motorway is due to close over the weekend of Saturday 19 September, when Reading are scheduled to host Notts County at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
The club said it had held “constructive discussions” with Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) and National Highways about the planned closure.
Reading said it had raised concerns about the timing of the works and the potential impact on supporters travelling to the match, as well as the wider Reading community and local road network.
The club also asked whether the essential works could be moved to another weekend before SSEN’s deadline for completing them.
However, Reading said it had now been told that moving the closure was not possible because of operational arrangements already in place.
The club said it remained disappointed that it had not been consulted before the closure was originally announced.
It added that it recognised the “essential nature” of the works and that the priority was now to minimise disruption.
Reading said it was working with SSEN, National Highways and local partners to identify measures that could help supporters plan their journeys and reduce the impact on the local road network.
Supporters attending the Notts County match have been urged to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.
The club said further travel advice would be issued before the fixture as discussions with SSEN and National Highways continue.
The M4 closure is linked to essential electricity infrastructure works being carried out by SSEN.
Reading supporters are being advised to check the latest travel information before setting off for the match.
