This week we are experiencing our third heatwave this year. For many people it means uncomfortable nights and wilted gardens. For others – older residents, young children and those with health conditions – it can be dangerous. Add in the increasing risk of flooding and extreme storms, and it is clear that climate change is no longer a future problem. It is happening now, and we all need to be ready.
As the Liberal Democrat Lead Councillor for the Climate Emergency, I believe we have a responsibility not only to cut carbon emissions but also to make our communities more resilient to the changes already taking place.
That is why Wokingham Borough Council’s revised Climate and Nature Strategy puts a greater focus on climate resilience and nature recovery. We want a borough where people can enjoy clean air, thriving green spaces and a healthy environment, while being prepared for the challenges a changing climate will bring.
There is much to be proud of. Through our Solar Together scheme, 665 households have installed solar panels, reducing emissions and cutting energy bills. Our recycling rate has reached 58 per cent, making Wokingham one of the best-performing areas in the country. We have improved public transport too – one example is the enhanced Route 3 bus service between Arborfield and Wokingham already seeing passenger numbers rise by more than 60 per cent.
But there is much more to do.
The largest source of emissions in our borough comes from our homes. Improving insulation, installing solar panels and making homes more energy efficient can save residents money while reducing carbon emissions. We know many people want to take action but don’t always know where to start, which is why the council is continuing to provide practical support and advice.
Nature is also one of our greatest allies in tackling climate change. Trees and green spaces reduce flood risk, improve air quality and support our physical and mental wellbeing. I am particularly proud that we have planted more than 60,000 trees across the borough and achieved Tree City of the World status in recognition of our commitment to protecting our natural environment.
No council can tackle the climate emergency alone. Real progress will only happen if all of us play our part – by reducing waste, making greener travel choices, improving our homes and supporting local environmental projects.
The climate emergency can sometimes feel overwhelming, but there is hope in the action being taken across our borough every day. If we work together, we can create a greener, healthier and more resilient Wokingham for our children and grandchildren.
