BINFIELD continued their perfect start to the season after they beat Virginia Water 2-0 to put them top of the league having won their opening three matches.
A goal in each half helped the Moles to claim three points as Josh Helmore opened the scoring five minutes before the break, whole Asa Povey doubled the lead in the second half.
Povey had the chance to claim his brace from the penalty spot with just ten minutes remaining, but saw his spot kick saved by Matt Jones in the Virginia Water net.
“Virginia water are a very good side, first half they caused us all sort so problems,” said Binfield manager Roger Herridge.
“They could have been a few up at half time but we got ourselves in front and in the second half we were a lot better.we got the second goal and their keeper kept us out from adding a few more.
“We had some anxious moments in the game, but that’s always going to happen ,you’re never going to dominate the whole 90 minutes.
The Moles are yet to concede in the league having beaten Briscombe & Thrupp 1-0 away from home before defeating Windsor 2-0 in their first home match.
“The Bruscombe game was 1-0 and they arguably should have won, but our hard work and resolve got us the victory,” continued Herridge.
“Windsor was very comfortable. The FA Cup game, they stopped us from playing but we kept our belief and our bench helped us through with their quality to change the game and that was a massive bonus.
Next up for Binfield is a cup tie against Chalfont Wasps on Friday, August 15 before they travel away to Burnham in their fourth league fixture of the season.
“Our cup game on Friday against Chalfont is our next focus. We’re looking at the squad and making sure everyone gets an opportunity so there will be changes.
“Then we look to Tuesday against Burnham who haven’t had a great start but we know they’ve got a good manager and quality players. They’ll have confidence from promotion last season and will be used to winning games.
Herridge declared his delight at Binfield’s promising start to the season but has urged for the club to stay grounded.
“If you’d said to us ten days ago we’d be where we are in the league with three wins and having progressed in the fa cup we would have bitten your hand off.
“In terms of results, it couldn’t have gone any better. Performance-wise we’ve got a squad in transition, we have a core of players here from last year but we’ve also added a lot of new signings so I don’t think we are the finished article yet.
“We’ve had a great start, but it is only a start. We need to keep grounded, there are many good teams in the league. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. There is a good feeling about the place, we couldn’t be any more pleased.
“Last year was a disappointment, the squad wasn’t as deep in quality as it needed to be and we lost key players to injury.
“We always target a place in the top six, with the squad we’ve got we will get better and should aspirations of finishing high in the league.
“Ninth place isn’t good enough for a club like Binfield and we aspire to finish higher.”
