John O’Shea has returned to Reading to join Jose Gomes’ coaching staff having retired from playing last season.
The Republic or Ireland international finished his illustrious career with a one-year spell at Reading, where he was given a guard of honour in his final professional appearance as he came as a substitute in Reading’s final game of last season against Birmingham City.
O’Shea made more than 500 club appearances and won 118 international caps for the Republic of Ireland in a career littered with success, which saw him win five Premier League titles and a Champions League with Manchester United.
He will now join Jose Gomes’ coaching staff as part of the first team as he embarks on his first job as a coach.
“John is an intelligent, modest, positive, highly-respected individual who enjoyed a quite remarkable playing career,” said Jose Gomes.
“He competed at the very highest level and remained a model professional throughout and he set a perfect example for our young players to follow last season.
“I am excited to work alongside him again, this time as a fellow coach and I’m delighted he has agreed to join us.”
Chief Executive Nigel Howe said: “As a player, John O’Shea won everything. Now, I am delighted that he beings a new career on the other side of the white line at Reading Football Club. John is a man who commands so much respect within the world of football and I am sure our players will benefit hugely from the knowledge he has acquired and can now share as a first team coach.”
