READING FC WOMEN’s manager Liam Gilbert has challenged his side to be ‘more clinical’ following their away loss at Sunderland.
The Royals tasted defeat following a run of two consecutive wins prior to their trip to the North East on Sunday.
Having hit the upright twice through Sanne Troelsgaard, Reading were punished as the Black Cats raced into a 3-0 lead.
Freya Gregory netted what turned out to be a consolation goal as the game ended 3-1 in favour of the hosts.
“It’s a tough one to take, especially the manner of the way we conceded the goals,” said Gilbert.
“Goals from set pieces is something we expected. We’re a bit disappointed, especially because we’ve highlighted this issue.
“We kept going and had a few chances, which on a different day might have gone in a different direction.
“Obviously we hit the post and the crossbar and the keeper made some good saves in the second-half.
“The timing of their goals did set us back a bit, but the girls rejuvenated themselves quite well and we remained positive.
“However, we still need to tidy up certain individual details and work on certain things.”
The Royals are back on home soil this Sunday when they host Sheffield United, who have picked up seven points from six games to put them in ninth position.
Gilbert reiterated the importance of his side taking their chances if they are to pick up positive results.
He continued: “”In terms of establishing more of an identity and improving the connection among players on the pitch, we’re making progress.
“It’s difficult to say this after a loss, but for me, there were definitely different passages of play. I want to watch the game back and see if I still believe in those comments.
“But, yes, I’m starting to see more, and to be fair to the girls, they didn’t give up. We talked a lot about not giving up, and even at 3-1 down with 10 minutes to go, we kept pushing.
“That’s what it comes down to in football matches, set pieces to goals. We’ve had nearly nine-ten set pieces, and that makes a difference in football. At our level, you need to take accountability in those situations.
“It’s frustrating; that’s probably the best word to describe it. But it’s still progress, and we move forward.”
