Clive Jones, the MP for Wokingham, welcomed Wokingham’s two newly elected members of the youth parliament (MYPs) to Westminster recently.
Jasmine Dix, from The Holt, and Laima Dhimitri, from Maiden Erlegh, were elected earlier this year to represent Wokingham as the area’s two members of the youth parliament.
The two Year 11 students were elected by their peers following a debate at the council offices. In their new roles, they will:
-
Run campaigns.
-
Hold debates in the local council.
-
Gather feedback from young people through national ballots.
Clive Jones MP congratulated Jasmine and Laima on their election by welcoming them to the heart of British politics in Westminster.
During the visit, Wokingham’s MP gave the pair a private tour of the House of Commons, explaining the Palace of Westminster’s rich history and the important role MPs play in representing their constituents.
Following the visit, Clive Jones, the Liberal Democrat MP for Wokingham, said: “I was delighted to hear that Laima and Jasmine were elected as our new members of the youth parliament – a fantastic opportunity for any young person.
“After inviting our two new youth MPs to Westminster, it became clear why so many young people put their faith in them.
“Their passion for politics and their determination to make a difference for their generation is inspiring, and I look forward to supporting them as they raise the voices of young people across Wokingham.”
