A NEW memorial site in Finchampstead is all set to welcome anyone wishing to reflect on the pandemic.
The Covid Memorial Woodland, planted by members of the Wokingham community, is ready to open to the public this evening.
A council spokesperson said: “The Covid Memorial Woodland has been created as a peaceful place to remember and reflect on the impact of the pandemic across Wokingham Borough.”
Thousands of trees have been planted at the site by residents, volunteers, community groups, partners and council teams.
The Woodland Trust supported much of the tree planting taking place beside areas of grassland and wildflowers.
To mark the opening of the woodland, organisers are holding a commemorative evening.
It will include an introduction to the woodland, a short reading and moment of reflection and recognition for the volunteers who helped plant the trees.
There will also be a special watering, and an opportunity to walk through the new woodland as the sun sets.
The event is open to everyone, with people who helped plant the woodland being particularly encouraged to attend.
It will take place at the Covid Memorial Woodland, near California Country Park, today, August 27, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
People driving to the event should park at California Country Park car park and follow the signs along the accessible paths.
Parking will be free for attendees from 5pm on the evening of the event.
Jacksons Café will remain open until 8pm, serving light refreshments and hot and cold drinks.
Toilets will also remain open until 8pm for event attendees.
