THE first market in the new Market Place will take place this week.
On Thursday, September 6, Wokingham Town Council will welcome back stallholders for the monthly farmers market.
On offer will be a range of local produce from many familiar traders including meat, eggs, fish, cheese and seasonal fruit and vegetables.
The council said that many long-standing regular traders will be joined by new faces, and there will be more enhancements over the coming months as the Market continues to develop and grow into the new space.
The farmers market will run from 9am to 2pm on the first Thursday of the month, while the weekly general markets will continue to run on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9am to 5pm, just as it has done since the Royal charter was granted almost 900 years ago.
The town council said it wanted to thank everyone including traders, shoppers and neighbours who ensured that the market continued to trade in its temporary location in Alexandra Plaza over the past year.
And the statement added that the traders are looking forward to being back and welcoming existing and new customers to their stalls. The council is encouraging all residents to come along and get the market buzzing once more in its traditional home in the centre of town.
Cllr Nick Campbell-White, Chairman of the Amenities Committee said: “We are absolutely delighted to be welcoming the market back to Market Place.
“This has been a long and difficult project but the newly refurbished space offers everything the market needs – a more flexible area with inbuilt utilities that ensures our market will be able to trade into the future. We know some people have missed their regular visits and everyone can now look forward to trading and shopping once more.”
