It’s one of the biggest killers of men in the UK but an initiative to tackle prostate cancer is expected to attract thousands to have a free check-up this Saturday.
The Rutherford Cancer Centre Thames Valley has teamed up with the Reading Lions to provide thousands of men in Berkshire with free prostate cancer checks, known as the PSA test, on Saturday, November 16.
More than 47,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK each year – or 130 a day, and more than 11,000 men dying from the disease per year. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer and the biggest killer of male cancer patients in the UK.
The PSA test is a simple blood test that is used to check for a protein produced by prostate cancer cells.
A raised level through a blood test could indicate cancerous cells.
The annual event is hugely popular and is taking place at the Shinfield-based Rutherford Cancer Centre Thames Valley for the first time, It offers pioneering proton beam therapy as well as conventional cancer treatments.
More than 2,000 men are expected this Saturday from 8am to 6pm. Entry is free.
