Thames Valley Police has confirmed to Wokingham Today that the incident on Sunday morning in Peach Street was “not a stabbing” following reports on social media and other news media suggesting it was.
The victim remains in hospital.
The force is still appealing for witnesses following the assault in the early hours of Sunday morning.
A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police had previously told Wokingham Today: “On Sunday, at around 2.20am, we were called to Peach Street following a report of an assault taking place.
“Officers attended and found a man in his twenties with serious injuries.
“Our investigation is going, and we ask that any witnesses please contact us on 101 quoting reference 43260326101.”
