COUNCIL bosses have announced a timetable for festive waste and recycling collections.
During Christmas and New Year, there will be a two-day delay on collections before normal service resumes on Monday, January 14.
Collections will also begin earlier than normal, and residents are therefore asked to leave their rubbish out the night before a collection.
There are a number of steps that residents can take to minimise waste going to landfill at a time when we traditionally throw more away: These including avoiding metallic or plastic-based wrapping paper as these cannot be put in black recycling boxes and buying loose fruit and vegetables.
Residents are also asked to compost vegetable and fruit peelings, recycle plastic bottles, paper/card, aerosols and food/drink tins and break down cardboard boxes to save space and ensure they fit in the black recycling box.
Recycling centres at Smallmead, Island Road, Reading, and Longshot Lane, Bracknell are open during the holiday period apart from Tuesday 25 December, Wednesday 26 December and Tuesday 1 January. On Monday 24 December recycling centres will be open from 8am until 4pm.
Cllr Norman Jorgensen, executive member for environment, sports, environmental health, leisure and libraries, said: “Inevitably, most of us produce more waste over the Christmas period. However, I hope that by following some of these easy tips we can minimise how much goes to landfill.”
“Our re3 recycling centres can take old or unwanted items as well as real Christmas trees. Participants in our garden waste scheme can also chop up their real Christmas trees for collection.”
