Wokingham residents are being urged to step away from the bin and dig out their broken toasters, torn trousers, and battered bicycles, as the highly anticipated Wokingham Repair Café returns tomorrow (Saturday).
Taking place on Saturday from 10am until 1pm at All Saint’s Church,, the community-led initiative promises to breathe new life into beloved household items that would otherwise end up in landfill.
Driven by a team of skilled local volunteers, the event offers a free, friendly, and practical solution to our modern throwaway culture.
With the cost of living remaining a pressing concern for many across the borough, the Repair Café offers more than just environmental benefits.
Replacing household electronics, clothing, and small furniture can be costly. This weekend’s event provides an opportunity to save money while learning valuable maintenance skills from local experts.
Volunteers – ranging from amateur seamstresses to retired electricians and carpenters – will be on hand to tinker, stitch, glue, and solder items back to working order.
Visitors are invited to sit with the repairers, watch the process, and even pick up a few DIY skills along the way.
The team is equipped to tackle a wide variety of household faults. If you can carry it through the door, the volunteers will usually take a look at it.
Note that the team cannot accept large white goods (like washing machines or fridges), petrol-driven items, or anything containing hazardous materials.
The Wokingham Repair Café isn’t just a workshop; it’s a bustling community hub. Even if you don’t have anything that needs fixing, residents are encouraged to drop in for a cup of tea, a slice of homemade cake, and a chat with neighbours.
The café operates on a first-come, first-served basis. While all repairs are carried out completely free of charge by the volunteers, voluntary donations are warmly welcomed to help cover the cost of basic materials, tools, and venue hire for future events.
